Istanbul, November 14 (SO News/Agency) Six people have been killed as a result of a powerful explosion on Sunday evening in Istiqlal, the famous business center of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city.
According to reports, the blast took place on a busy commercial highway in Istiqlal. Police cordoned off the area after that. Helicopters were flying over the city center and sirens were blaring.
According to local journalists, the police had set up a large security fence to prevent access to the affected area in view of the fear of a second explosion. Immediately after the blast, a heavy contingent of security forces was deployed and they blocked all the entrances. .
Journalists say that crime inspectors remain at the scene. Anatolu reports that Istanbul’s chief public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the blast.
The explosion took place on the famous Istiqlal shopping highway yesterday evening after 4 pm local time. The area is popular with locals and tourists. According to the pictures posted on social media, flames rose after the explosion, which immediately spread fear and panic. And people started running everywhere.
The images also showed a large black meteor crater, as well as several bodies lying on the ground nearby. The Turkish Red Crescent said the dead and injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Turkey’s regulator RTU banned its coverage about an hour after the explosion.
Istanbul’s Mayor Imamoglu prayed on Twitter for God’s forgiveness for those who lost their lives in the explosion on Istiqlal Avenue, expressed his condolences to the families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
It should be noted that Istiklal Street was previously targeted during a campaign of terrorist attacks targeting Istanbul in 2015-2016. The extremist organization ISIS claimed responsibility for these attacks. 500 people were killed and more than 2000 were injured.
